Collapsible push rod tubes are lifesavers when you've damaged one of your original push rod tubes. They allow you to remove the damaged tube, and replace it without pulling the cylinder head which would take you the better part of a day. They are a spring-loaded, two-piece design that seals with an o-ring in the middle.
They are very simple to install, but they can be expected to "weep" oil over time, being they are not a one-piece design like the original. If you have several bad push rod tubes, you might be better off pulling the head and replacing them with original-style one-piece tubes. They are far less leak-prone and much cheaper.
Aren't collapsible push rod tubes a hokey fix? Not at all! In fact, they are a Porsche design that was used on all 930 Turbo engines in the 1970's and 80's. It was good enough for them, so it is good enough for us!
